History
  • 1500 22nd April - Pedro Alvares Cabral (1460-1526), Portuguese explorer and master of the Nina in 1492, discovered Brazil and claimed it for Portugal
  • 1540, Spanish conquistador Cabeza de Vaca was appointed governor of the Brazilian province of Rio de la Plata 1550 African slaves were shipped to Brazil to work sugar plantations
  • 1624, The Dutch conquered Salvador 1636 Nov 17 - Brazilian general Henrique Dias won a decisive battle against the Dutch
  • 1661 Aug 6, Holland sold Brazil to Portugal for 8 million guilders

  • Food is a very major part of their culture. There are "National foods", such as Feijoada, which a stew consisting of beans and pork.

  • The national drink is Coffee, and the national alcoholic drink is Cachaça
  • Soccer is the most popular sport in Brazil, and has been accepted as a major part of the Brazilian culture and the lives of Brazilians.
  • Family is very important to Brazilians. It forms the basic stability for most people, and is the foundation of each Brazilian's life. Families tend to be quite large, and embracing to distant relatives, not just parents and siblings.
  • There is racial discrimination, due to the different races throughout the country.
  • Generosity and hospitality is greatly practiced in Brazil. Even the poorest of people will offer things to visitors and friends.
  • Relationships with peers, family, and even strangers are a priority. It is so important.
